Michael Ward, who has died aged 80, was the expedition doctor during the 1953 ascent of Everest which resulted in Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's conquest of the summit; the success of the expedition owed much to Ward, who had meticulously researched the possibilities of an ascent from the Nepalese side of the mountain and organised the crucial reconnaissance mission in 1951.
