Hitting the John Muir Trail

On our way to hike Mount Whitney last summer, a friend and I picked up a hitchhiker in Bishop, on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

"Whatever you do, don't ever hike the JMT," warned Pete, the exhausted hitchhiker.

Known among backpackers as the JMT, the 212-mile John Muir Trail runs from Yosemite Valley south to Mount Whitney — the highest point in the contiguous United States.
